What is a Dental Sealant? Dental sealants is a very thin, plastic coating painted on the chewing surfaces of teeth. Generally, the dentist or hygienist applies to sealant to just the back teeth, (molars) to protect against tooth decay. The sealant is carefully painted into the depressions and grooves of the teeth, forming a protective shield over the enamel of each tooth for food particles and bacteria cannot linger there.

Dental sealants can be applied to both adult and baby teeth. We recommend the sealants for patients with deep grooves and/or a history with cavities in the molars. The process of having sealants applied is quick and painless for the patient, but has lasting advantages.

Here are the 3 easy steps to dental sealants:

1. Cleaning – The teeth are cleaned and polished, removing all plaque and food debris.

2. Preparation – Next, the tooth with be dried, etched with an etching tool, rinsed and then dried again. This whole process takes just minutes, and readies the teeth to have a proper surface to accept the sealant.

3. Application – The sealant is painted on by the hygienist in a light coat, and then a special light is shined on the surface for 30 seconds to cure the sealant and bond it to the tooth.

4. Evaluation – The dental hygienist will evaluate the dental sealant and confirm that it thoroughly bonded. When the dental sealant has hardened completely, it becomes a strong and durable coating. Patients can chew on the tooth as soon as this is complete.

Dental sealants last about 10 years and can be re-applied if necessary. The entire process is done in a single visit and often dental insurance covers dental sealants for children. If you are interested in learning more about sealants, please contact our office today for an appointment.
